A wallet manages keys.
There are no tiny coins stored inside a phone. Bitcoin’s ledger records spendable outputs. Keys let a wallet satisfy the conditions required to spend them. The important question is who can authorize that spending.
An app showing a balance does not by itself answer the question. Some apps hold keys for you. Others let you hold them yourself. Similar screens can hide very different arrangements.
Two paths to access and recovery.
With a custodial provider, you ask the provider to make payments. Account recovery may help if you lose a password, but withdrawals depend on the provider’s systems and policies. Insolvency, freezes or compromise can still put funds at risk.
With self-custody, you manage the spending keys and recovery material. You gain direct control and take on the work of protecting it. There is no universal password-reset desk for the Bitcoin network.
Control and recovery follow the keys.
- You sign inYour account requests a payment.
- Provider holds keysThe provider authorizes the spend.
- Recovery through providerAccount recovery may help, subject to policy and availability.
- You hold keysYour wallet authorizes the spend.
- You protect backupsRecovery needs valid backup material and any other required secrets.
- Recovery by youA replacement device may restore access. No usable keys or backups may mean permanent loss.
Losing a phone is not always losing access.
A lost or damaged device may be replaceable if you have the correct usable backup and any required passphrase or other recovery material. The details depend on the wallet. Follow its verified recovery procedure and understand what the backup actually covers.
If every usable key and backup is lost, the funds may become permanently unspendable. If someone else obtains the spending secrets, they may spend the funds. A backup needs to be both recoverable by you and protected from others.
Make the recovery plan concrete.
Find out whether the wallet is custodial, what happens if the provider disappears, and what happens if your device fails. Learn how to verify receiving details and keep software current. Practice a wallet’s documented recovery process with a small test amount before relying on it.
Check your understanding
Your phone breaks, but you still have a valid backup and everything needed to restore the wallet. Must the bitcoin be lost?
No. Recovery may be possible using the wallet’s documented procedure. A broken device and the loss of all usable recovery material are different events.
